The United States (U.S.) Army Military History Research Collection (MHRC) was begun at Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylvania, in 1967. Its mission was the "collection, preservation and utilization of materials relating to the history and traditions of the U.S. Army." The organization's name was changed to the U.S. Army Military History Institute (MHI) in 1977. In 2002, it became part of the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center (AHEC).

The Military Records Division of the Department of Archives and History was informally established in the late 1920s or early 1930s. Peter Brannon was the head of the division until 1955. The division was responsible for collecting and providing access to records and manuscripts that pertained to the state and its citizens' participation in militia units and military conflicts from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War.
